My usual glee at snagging bargains was very much tempered by the realisation that people in the town will no longer be able to borrow music from the library.

This afternoon, I went to visit one of the libraries I'm going to be managing in my new job; known and worked in it for years but it's just reopened today after physical reconstruction, to accommodate new post-cuts policy blahblah. Down from two floors to one, which I knew was coming. Walked around what's left, thinking of what you'd written, finally had to ask one of the staff: "Where are the CDs now?" We both walked around - it's not a large space - before realising there weren't any.

This isn't the main library in the area by any means, so I'm assuming they will still have music to borrow, but I could be wrong.

I know, I know, not everybody has internet access but to be honest, I don't borrow CDs from the library any more and I'm in 'em three, four days a week - I just stream for free. Think library CD loans have been affected a lot by that.

Great taste! I'm listening to the Michael Brook album now on Spotify and it sounds great! Looks like more of the family inheritance is about to hit the dust ...

It's a hardware thing. People didn't necessarily rush out and buy DVD players when they came out, but when their VHS player packed in they bought a DVD player. Same with CDs - as the hardware claps out, they'll be redundant

Today's batch from the public library's ongoing "CDs are redundant" 50p sale. Crazy!

It's great that you're nabbing some many bargains there. I'm finding the same since I moved over here to New Zealand a year ago. The kids are still streaming stuff but CD is a dirty word (or a couple) for a lot of real music fans. A lot of the older guys never sold their records and didn't move to CD and younger folks are getting caught up in the whole vinyl thing. Which leaves loads of cheap CDs all over the place in charity shops and music shops. Suits me perfectly!

Just chucking the question out there but do any of you lot have a preference for format, or are you like me that the music itself is the most important thing and format doesn't really matter.

CD for me! It's easier to store than vinyl and as you say it's really easy to pick up lots of cheap and interesting music on CD now.

Given a choice between paying twenty pounds for one new album on vinyl or getting umpteen interesting CDs in charity shops or on Amazon marketplace I'd go for the latter every time!

CDs. The Drop in price on the second hand market means that record hunting can be an afternoon's entertainment on a fiver, and this past years attempts to 'go wireless' have been a never ending succession of buying conversion doohickeys that never work, fiddling about with 32GB microsd cards and losing them, your phone running out of power just when you've settled in the back garden with a nice drink, spending 45 minutes every afternoon looking for the remote for the bluetooth hub, the bluetooth headphones which last about 15 minutes on a full charge, ad infinitum. I eventually just went out and spent 30 quid on a portable CD player to cart round the house.

If we're talking about new purchases, then CD. But used at a decent price means I'm fine with vinyl. And it's still the only way to get some music. If there's a box of 70s/80s twelves for 50p or £1 under the main racks in a record shop then I'll be in there, looking for soul/funk/disco treasures. Also charity shops, some of which still turn up private pressed folk LPs from the 70s. Found this yesterday, in the Dove House hospice shop on Beverley Road in Hull:

Also picked up a Direct Drive 12" - still Britfunk to be found out there - and a bunch of other stuff. Not one thing anywhere else for the rest of the afternoon, though.

Would like to hear your thoughts on those two Tindersticks albums at some point, Gottonbold. I lost interest around the time of 'Curtains', but was always kinda curious as to whether their modus operandi altered/expanded in any way, or whether they just continued riffing on their original sound.

Nice score on the Ariel Pink, btw - for my money that's his second best; just behind 'The Doldrums'.

As important a pre-punk post-rock act as Pere Ubu, Suicide, Throbbing Gristle or Cabaret Voltaire, but because they had a few hits somehow discounted.

I tried both Tindersticks albums last night.

"Across Six Leap Years" is quite a departure, with Stuart Staples voice sitting atop washes of heavily processed and chopped up guitars. At points you could imagine you were listening to a Fennesz album.

"The Hungry Saw" staggers even more, with the band venturing into Drum N Bass territory.

ONLY JOKING!

Both albums sound like every other album Tindersticks have ever done!

^^^ To be fair to The 'Sticks (we do call them that, right?) there was a bit of a departure from their original style with the Simple Pleasure album, in 1999.

I heartily agree. Just bagged these two as well.

I've been enamoured with them since one of my favourite ever gigs at Hammersmith Odeon Dec '78.

George re-masters in SHM CD mini album format...

ATMP is a blinder.... full facsimilie of the original vinyl box and contents. It pisses all over the recent UK/US issue in every possible way. It mercifully leaves off the 2001 re-issue additions, which, with the possible exception of 'I Live For You' are really a bit revisonist - and tho' 'I Live For You' is a quality track it wouldn't be missed if it wasn't there. This was and is a stand-up stone classic - it didn't nor doesn't need the bonuses.

LITMW and Cloud Nine to follow....

I'm listening to a sample from "Triplicate" right now. I know some of the reviews have yawned about it being more of the same, with diminished returns, but so far... I'm tempted to get.

Have you listened to it yet, MMM?

This is excellent. I had been looking for a copy for years and it finally became available on Amazon

Sad Anne (YouTube link)

The key detail will date this story, but I played Sad Anne - on the Wilde Club split 12 inch pictured above - soon after meeting my future wife, and she asked me 'Why are they singing about Saddam?'

I missed out on The Bardots back in the day, but have been investigating them recently. You're right, "Sad Anne" is a fabulous song.

I met The Bardots' guitarist Andy Murphy when he had left the band and taken up a new career as an EFL teacher!

Mellowhype - Blackenedwhite. The yellow vinyl edition with stickers and whatnot that was released for record store day. was 4.72 for about an hour on Amazon before shooting back up to 25 quid 5 minutes after I bought it.

Still working through them.
Got to admit the Parsons didn't go down too well with the other half (specially as I've already got them on vinyl).
The Shostakovich was also a bit of a replication of vinyl as I had several (but not all of them) but Haitink's recordings really are exceptional (and I've heard/got quite a few others) so I treated myself.

This is quite a bargain on Amazon, with new copies available for just over seven quid.
