Dave Richmond on Serge Gainsbourg's histoire de Melody Nelson

And who played on Scott 4? Might've been him as well for all I know

By the way I originally meant sound or 'tone' as musiciany types are fond of saying.
Not playing or (reaches for gun)'chops'.

I saw Dave Richmond playing upright bass through effects pedals with a band I can't remember the name of a few years ago. I may have had an ale or two. He is some player though.

Been looking through my collection, thinking about which of 'em have the best recorded bass sound, pulling out a few to try and compare. I know it's a double bass rather'n electric but I still couldn't find one that sounds better on record than Richard Davis on

title track

I asked the bass nerds. Consensus is it's either Herbie Flowers or Scott himself.

Certainly not one of the best albums ever but it has Leland Sklar sounding at his best (and that's pretty damned good!)

Free's Andy Fraser; try this performance of Mr Big - especially where him and Paul Kossoff start trading solos at around 3.38

JJB. Good shout.Right up there.

Andy Fraser. Good player. Went to the same school as me (as did Matlock and Mikey Culture Club) but hardly a great bass sound. Bass solo? Shakes head and walks off tutting and swearing to himself....

Are we talking tone or style here? I'll say that one of the most identifiable bassists I've heard is Phil Lesh. Say what you will about the Dead but he is instantly recognizable to me whether he's on a Dead record or anything else. Honestly there haven't been many other than Lesh or Chris Squire that I could pick out of a line up.
