The singles of “lost” 80s legends A.R. Kane compiled

On October 1, One Little Indian will release A.R. Kane: Complete Singles Collection.

The band, active in the 1980s and early 90s, have fallen out of fashion in the last two decades, and their name now means little to most people under the age of 30 – but, as Simon Reynolds argues in his accompanying notes for the OLI release, it would be inaccurate to describe them as a “lost” or overlooked band.

“Not only were A.R. Kane renowned and revered [in the 80s], but, in certain quarters, they were regarded and written up as one of the central groups of their era. The singles and albums received rave reviews (and when I say “rave” I mean frothing at the mouth, purple-prose-drooling paeans). Their faces appeared on the front covers of the British music weekly papers. But A.R. Kane weren’t just critics’s faves either. 69, their debut album, topped the independent charts in the summer of 1988.”

Despite being considered the equals of My Bloody Valentine and the Pixies at the time, A.R. Kane – at its core a duo comprising Alex Ayuli and Rudy Tambala – have been somewhat written out of history. Any lip service that is paid to them these days, tends to focus on their collaboration with Colourbox as M/A/R/R/S, which yielded the Number One single ‘Pump Up The Volume’, released by 4AD in 1987.

As Reynolds writes, A.R. Kane’s music was initially compared by the music press to that of The Jesus & The Mary Chain, but in interviews they denied any significant allegiance to indie-rock, instead citing the likes of ECM’s Azymuth, Miles Davis, Weather Report and black post-punk group Basement 5 as influences.

Debuting in 1986 with the ‘When You’re Sad’ 12″ on One Little Indian, they signed to 4AD in ’87, releasing the Lollita EP, produced by Cocteau Twins’ Robin Guthrie. The following year they decamped to Rough Trade, where they would release landmark records like the Up Home! EP (1988) and the albums 69 (1988) and “i” (1989); come the 1990s, Ayuli and Tambala established their own label H.ark! and, in ’94, delivered their final album, New Clear Child. Their Rough Trade recordings in particular strongly influenced emerging shoegaze, psychedelic and post-rock groups like Flying Saucer Attack, Slowdive, Bark Psychosis and Disco Inferno.

One Little Indian’s Complete Singles collection, which will be available on CD and digital, brings together 32 tracks from the following releases:

When You’re Sad’- 12″ Single -1986 (One Little Indian Records; 12TP2)
‘Lollita’ -12″ Single – 1987 (4AD; BAD704)
M|A|R|R|S: ‘Anitina’ 12″ Single -1987 – (4AD; BAD707)
‘Up Home!’ 12″ Single -1988 – (Rough Trade; RTT201)
‘Love-sick’ 12″ Single -1988 (Rough Trade; RTT231)
‘Pop’ 12″ Single -1989 – (Rough Trade; RTT239)
‘Crack Up’ (1990) Virgin France
‘A Love From Outer Space’- 1992 (Luaka Bop/Warner Bros.)
”Sea Like a Child’ CD EP – 1994 (Third Stone Records; STONE009CD)
‘Honey Be (For Stella)’ CD Single – 1994 (Luaka Bop/Warner Bros; PRO-CD-7177)

-----

This could well be my reissue of the decade, never mind the year.

Updates, news and all things dreampop can be found at the official A.R. Kane Facebook page, where Rudy Tambala will give you the lowdown.

Smashing stuff! But it doesn't include the "Listen Up!" 12" by ARK by the look of it?

Rudi decided that Listen Up! wasn't really technically A.R. Kane during the planning stage, but there's no saying he won't change his mind again before the end.

And if he doesn't, I'll put together a little supplementary package of my own, which I'll be happy to copy for interested parties.

I'll be getting this, and I'd certainly be interested in any supplementary packages that you might feel inclined to put together!

I'll certainly be getting this. I picked up '69' on CD a few years ago (after reading a Simon Reynolds article) and was blown away by how fucking good it was. Why the British music press (MM excepted) wasn't championing them over the likes of The Wonder Stuff and The Stone Roses I'll never know.

Quite. Have you heard "i"?

Yeah, I picked it up a few months ago. Can't say I know it that well yet, but my first impression was that it was darker, denser, more sprawling version of '69'. Feels like the type of album that you need to immerse yourself in (preferably on headphones).

What do you make of 'New Clear Child', DG?

"i" feels more like a compilation than an album, or maybe a brilliant radio show that you're kicking yourself for not recording. The first side (tracks 1-7 on the CD, represented on the sleeve by a spade symbol from a suit of cards) is all dance-beat dreampop, the sort of thing you might expect if you'd picked up the Pop single that preceded the album and maybe the one-off A.R.K. single Listen Up! Then the second side (tracks 8-13, diamonds) is more spacey and dreamy in the style of Green Hazed Daze from the Love-Sick EP, with some nice acoustic and orchestral textures. Side Three (14-19, hearts) opens with Miles Apart, which could have come from before the debut album, followed by the Pop single (the 'pop' of the title represents the point at which a relationship-bubble bursts: thus the 'I'm gonna leave you' chorus) and drifts down to Sugarwings, a thrummy strummy ballad of lost love. Side Four (20-26, clubs) is the 'heavy' side, with stoner rock on Down, wild murder fantasies in Supervixens, the European Son-thrashing Insect Love, and the final dubby outflow of Catch My Drift.

An interesting way into the dense forest of "i" is to pick up the six-track companion Rem"i"xes album, which with two versions of Crack Up and only four other tracks looks like poor value (even for £1.97 from the Amazon Marketplace?) but the toned-down Miles Apart, the crisper Sugarwings and the completely re-vocalled (as in: like a different song) Catch My Drift will sell the parent album to you all over again, even if the breezier A Love from Outer Space can't improve on the perfect original.

New Clear Child is very much less 'experimental' and 'challenging' than the first two albums. That said, it's still a delicious summery record, full of the languid treats to be found on Side Two of "i" or the Love-Sick EP. Some of my favourite vocal performances on A.R. Kane records, too. Here's a song:

Cool as Moons

It might be worth ordering the set directly from One Little Indian, who are offering exclusive fan-bait:

-----

All purchases of Complete Singles Collection made through the One Little Indian store come with a 7" record sized collectors booklet which features a full biography by Simon Reynolds and an exclusive interview with Rudy Tambala about the making of the singles.

-----

I just cancelled my Amazon order and pre-ordered this way: just £1.51 more!

Incidentally, here's what's missing from the collection. I say missing, but really the Complete Singles Collection does what it says.

-----

First, the Listen Up! single, released under the name ARK.

UK 12" Rough Trade RTT 229 (1988)
Listen Up! (Quasar mix) 4.07
Listen Up! (Pulsar mix) 6.41

Next, the dub mix of Crack Up, which only appeared on the b-side of a white label promo - the a-side was the album version.

UK 12" Rough Trade ARK1 (1989)
Crack Up (ARK1B mix) 4.15

From the tenth instalment of the Volume CD/magazine series, an exclusive remix of Deep Blue Breath, from the New Clear Child album.

UK CD Volume V10 CD (1994)
Deep Blue Breath (London mix) 5.30

Finally, a different mix of Cool As Moons from the New Clear Child album, which appeared on a Third Stone label sampler.

UK CD Third Stone STONE 029CD (1995)
Cool as Moons (original mix) 3.32

-----

So that - just over 24 minutes - is all the non-album material that's not on the forthcoming 2CD set.

NB for these purposes I'm counting 1990's Rem"i"xes mini-LP as an album - it's available on CD, after all.

The album came out yesterday, but I'd pre-ordered with One Little Indian and got my copy on Saturday. Great to see those early singles and EPs on CD at long last, and particularly touching to find that the Rythm mix (sic) of Crack Up is the same as the dub mix from the b-side of my promotional ARK1 12 inch.

This really does now leave very little from the singles that's not on CD - the A.R.K. Listen Up! 12 inch, basically - so when I compile a companion volume I think I'll append the Inrain single that Rudy recorded for the Rough Trade Singles Club with Alison Shaw of Cranes, and his remixes for David Byrne, Celestial Tribes, Saint Etienne and Bark Psychosis.

I stuck with Amazon for my order, which I regret as I lost out on the nice booklet. I am itching to get the CD and have a listen. I would love a copy of your companion volume, when you compile it!

Got mine yesterday, and listened to the first disc last night. I hadn't heard "Baby Milk Snatcher" for so long, and it was fantastic to hear it again. The sound they achieved on this song is incredible - exotic and alien but earthy and humsn. This is my favourite AR Kane song!

...and that's only the album version - the one on the 12 inch Up Home! EP is what's on the Complete Singles Collection, and it's a shuddering dubtastic classic:

Ah yes, I like all the Dreampop bands like U2, Deftones, right back to classic indie like, uh, Wire.

Absolutely, mate. Only last week was I playing golf with Bono, Graham Sutton and Tarby, and we all agreed that the Dreampop scene is todally and utterly underrated.

Yes, it's like this big cathedral of orgasmic swooping sound, brewed up out of falling stars and mixed metaphors about The Velvet and Mary Chain and Cantwerk jamming with Miles 'Splatch' Perry and the Cocktail Twinset.

You know, I could have written for Melody Maker, me.

Nah, you seem to know what a mixed metaphor is, or at least how to spell it. You ain't ligit.

I'm looking forward to getting this comp. - i like a lot of the stuff off their EPs, but never owned them before. A tasty set.

I'm sure there is a good reason for this, but why does the new AR Kane singles comp feature Anatina by MARRS, but not Pump Up The Volume?

If one qualifies, why doesn't the other?

I think you pointed this one out yourself Mike, earlier in this thread.

Anitina is basically an A.R. Kane song with drum programming from Colourbox, whilst Pump Up the Volume is a Colourbox number with guitars by A.R. Kane.

That makes sense. I came across a "Best of Colourbox" CD recently in Oxfam which contained "PUTV", so maybe the track is more theirs than AR Kane's.

I made you a copy already, Mike!

The original Bark Psychosis Blue CD single featured an edit of Rudy's Big Shot remix, in order to meet the 20-minute maximum for chart eligibility (yeah, right) so I've used the full 8.32 version, which can be found on the Bark Psychosis Replay compilation (Third Stone STONE 041CD, 2004).

Anyone else?

The "Replay" compilation must be pretty hard to get hold of these days. The cheapest copy is £38.90 on Amazon. I did own two Bark Psychosis CDs - the Hex album and the Scum CD, but they got pinched. I was listening to the "Independency" compilation this afternoon, which has some superb stuff on.

The Bark Psychosis singles and twelve inches definitely deserve collecting on a remastered compilation, and would surely do as well as this recent AR Kane release has.

"Independecy" used to be the expensive one to buy second-hand. You're right as well, the Barkers really are due a nice set of reissues.

In reading this thread I also noticed the absence of the rem'i'xes-material (RTDCD171) on this compilation.

Miles Apart (remixed by Robin Guthrie)
Sugarwings (remixed by AR Kane)
Crack Up (remixed by Robin Guthrie)
Love From Outer Space (remixed by AR Kane)
Catch My Drift (remixed by AR Kane)
Crack Up (Space Mix) (remixed by Robin Guthrie)

Yes, they could have found space for that - and the A.R.K. single - if they'd only left off all the album versions, and the short version of Pop. I suppose the Rem"i"xes mini-LP is considered an album in its own right, since it's available on CD.

In an ideal world, we'd soon see remastered editions of both the Rough Trade albums, in replica vinyl sleeves, with Rem"i"xes making up part of a second disc with "i".

I've just listened to the odds and sods disc and enjoyed it a lot. Thank you.

It was great to hear "Listen Up!" again, and the cut up vocal samples brought a smile to my face. R-R-R-R-R-Ronald Reagan!

I really liked the three tracks by Inrain. I didn't know this name. Was this all they did?

Those three tracks - from this Rough Trade Singles Club release - were all they released at the time, and even on this Japanese compilation from a couple of years later they're sourced from vinyl.

But Alison Shaw was of course the singer with Cranes, so if the vocals are what you enjoy then there's more to explore there. Rudy Tambala's later work with a female vocalist (his sister Maggie) as Sufi is a story for another day.

However, from what Rudy's been saying on Facebook, he and Alison have been working together again this year. I might ask him about the significance of the Inrain name - is it (in) R-for-Rudy, A-for-Alison (in), or what?

The first album by Sufi (that's Rudy Tambala with his sister Maggie on vocals) Life's Rising (1995) is available used or new for under a pound here. Perfect for a warm summer evening.

The second Sufi album Lovers & Trippers (1997) might cost you two pounds here. This one's a bit harder-edged, but still sweet stuff. Includes their version of A.R. Kane's Cool As Moons, from New Clear Child.

Have you heard of Stubborn Heart? Someone copied their album for me, saying it sounded like The Beloved. I reckon there's a definite AR Kane flavour though:

Just started playing that - a minute or so ago - and immediately recognised the voice. Googled it, and it's Luca Santucci, who sings on all the Leila albums.

Very nice, so far. Thanks!

This is getting spooky, dlgladwin; I wonder if our record collections might be twins!

What a band, what a band.
I'm perpetually in the thrall of that untitled (on the sleeve at least) b-side of When You're Sad, that contains the repeated line ''Seems so far away''.
The sleeve-art - by Me Company, I'm guessing - reflects the music so well.

I remember seeing a snippet of Baby Milk Snatcher on ITV's The Chart Show one lazy Saturday morning and thinking ''What on earth is this?!?!'' Its nearly subsonic bassline is on a par with Poptones.

Ah, A.R. Kane were two of the best!

That first One Little Indian single apparently had a pair of different titles, neither When You're Sad nor You Seem So Far Away. Details here, from a blog post by Rudy Tambala, who ought to know:

http://arkane.co.uk/blog/68496/You_push_a_knife_into_my_womb___25th_Anniversary

Did you pick up the 2CD singles collection, from 2012? great to have those non-album sides on CD at last, including the definitive 12" version of Baby Milk Snatcher.

Yes, I must purchase it, especially for the Simon Reynolds sleeve-notes. As ever, thanks for this extra info and the link.Had no idea there was a website!

Tellingly, Kitchens of Distinction were fans too.

Did you catch the recent 'A.R. Kane +' live act (Was it this year or last?)

Enjoy the dubbish Rythm Mix (sic) of Crack Up when you do - recorded from a vinyl promo by my good self!

Kitchens drummer Dan Goodwin had previously played with A.R. Kane. I still enjoy Love Is Hell and the associated singles, but never really followed them afterwards.

Didn't make the #A.R. Kane live shows recently, owing to work and other commitments, but from what Rudy has been saying on Facebook it seems there might be more...and even new material.

Fantastic news. I look forward...

Kitchens were - and I imagine, still are - a fantastic live act, not to mention great for amusing mid-gig banter.
I remember them stepping in to the breach to replace Ride's support act Bleach at the last minute, which resulted in the trio blowing the headliners off the stage.* Their 1991 b-side Three to Beam Up was their sonic peak (i.m.h.o.)

(*Autumn 1990 at the Town & Country Club, London)

I think the Kitchens' second album, "Strange Free World" is just as good as "Love Is Hell".

That was the first one I heard, on the John Peel show. Still prefer the single version with the bass intro to the vocal start on the album.
