Back in the day, when the shipyards were still open, there was a little corner pub at the bottom of every single street leading down to the Tyne. They'd open at 11 and start preparing tray after tray of pints for the noon lunch hour, everyone would come in and down four, then the same thing again at the final whistle. Me Dad was one of the last of that breed. I only ever saw him fully sober for a few hours on Saturday and Sunday mornings before he was off down the WMC. And he wasn't considered at all exceptional down our way.

My first job was working in local government, (early 80s) and the County Hall had an on-site subsidised pub open at lunchtime. People these days getting their knickers in a twist about binge drinking have no inkling about what a comparatively abstemious culture we've actually become.
